What are the 4 types of computer maintenance?

maintenance tips

What are the 4 types of computer maintenance?

  1. Over time, your system builds up temp files that need to be cleared out. Specialized software exists to take care of this task.
  2. Keeping your OS up-to-date is very important. The OS is never "finished", what you get as an OS is simply the best, least buggy version of the OS at the scheduled release date. So, update and patches are regarded a normal in the life cycle of software.
  3. Rather than running the various programs manually, the OS has built in mechanisms that allow the user to schedule tasks to automatically run at predetermined times or based on action triggers, such as loggin in or shutting down.
  4. Lastly, there are some fixes that solve the problem better than 50% of the time. It's one of the simplests, most idiotic, and successful fixes that solves many problems: Cycling the power on the machine.

Some will say that cycling the power is a noobs call to action, however, shutting down the computer, and unpluggin it for 3-4 minutes is a good first step towards solving your issue. 😏

Monthly computer maintenance

  • scan for rootkit using your anti-virus software
  • check for updates for OS and Apps
  • run system cleaner
  • verify backups are being stored correctly by recovering some data
  • blow dust out of the computer case. Dusty environments can overheat a CPU and graphics card very quicky if it's not removed on a regular basis.

Current operating system updates

  • always run OS sytem updates they become available. This will prevent opportunistic viruses from accessing your computer.

Computer maintenance schedule

  • Assign system tasks to take care of the routine tasks that need to be performed.

Regular computer maintenance

The fail safe quick fix is to "shut off" the computer and unplug it from the wall for 3 minutes. As dumb as this sounds, for the basic quick fix, try this and see if it works. Obviously, this won't work for every situation, but it's a first goto fix for most problems.

Strong Passwords that are Easy to Remember

Strong Passwords that are Easy to Remember

Passwords are the worst. They are difficult to remember, difficult to create and difficult to diffrentiate between sites.

Requirements

Most current password systems will require the following:
  • Between 8-12, sometimes 16, characters
  • A number 0-9
  • A capital letter A-Z
  • A lower case letter a-z
  • A punctuation mark !@# (recommended confining to these only)

Complex Passwords

The easiest way to create passwords is to use a system to build unique passwords that are easy to remember. The easiest way is to take two characters from the domain, a year, a punctuation mark, and a key word, and combind them together into a phrase that is almost the same for every site, yet slightly different.

Different Passwords

We also want each password for each website to be unique, so that if one site is hacked then your user name and password for the hacked site can’t be used to gain access to your accounts on different sites.

Strong Passwords

The way to do this is to build a password phrase, such as below:

Microsoft to ends support for Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022

Microsoft to ends support for Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022

(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp is pulling the plug on its once omnipresent browser, Internet Explorer, next year as it prepares to battle market leader Chrome with its slicker Edge browser.

Launched in 1995, Internet Explorer became the dominant browser for over a decade as it was bundled with Microsoft's Windows operating system that came pre-installed in billions of computers.

The browser, however, started losing out to Google's Chrome in the late 2000s and has become a subject of countless internet memes for its sluggishness in comparison to its rivals.

To compete better, Microsoft launched the Edge browser in 2015 that runs on the same technology as the Google browser.

As of April, Chrome has a 65% share of the global browser market, followed by Apple Inc's Safari, with an 18% share, according to web analytics firm Statcounter. Microsoft Edge has a 3% share, while Internet Explorer has a miniscule share of the market it once dominated.

The Windows software maker said on Wednesday the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 was in its faster and more secure Microsoft Edge.

"Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10," the company said in a blog post. (https://bit.ly/341JvuE)

The browser was at the heart of an antitrust case against Microsoft more than two decades ago, with a U.S. judge deciding that the software titan had broken the law after it combined Internet Explorer and the Windows operating system.

The most serious violations of the law were upheld on appeal, but the company continued to bundle its operating system and browser.

This software is one of the most impressive amateur projects that I have seen. The reason for this is that I was attempting to build the same software some time ago. Presenta is a much better, better coded version of my same idea. It\'s uncanny that Francisco\'s Presenta is so close to what I was envisioning.

The idea behind Presenta is a quick, easy to create slideshow/presentation player.

Based on the markdown format, as the base human readable format, the user can easily piece together text, links, images, and video within minutes, which can be easily shared across the internet.

The presentations are divided into blocks similar to the markdown file\'s "---\"

PyInstaller can take a Python script and bundle it up as a standalone executable for macOS, Linux and apparently Windows too (I've not tried it on Windows yet).

Today I managed to build Datasette executables for macOS and Linux using the following recipe:

Demystifying SEO with experiments - Pinterest Engineering Blog

Julie Ahn | Pinterest engineer, Growth

Search engine optimization (SEO) has been one of the biggest drivers of growth for Pinterest. However, it wasn’t always easy to find winning strategies at our scale. Traditionally, SEO tactics include trying out different known strategies and hoping for the best. You might have a good traffic day or a bad traffic day and not know what really triggered it, which often makes people think of SEO as magic rather than engineering.

Our SEO goal is to help billions of internet users discover Pinterest and find value in it as a visual bookmarking tool. Over time we’ve found the only way to verify if a change affects the user behavior positively is to run an A/B test. Unfortunately, we didn’t have similar tools to test search engine behavior, so we built an experiment framework and used it to turn “magic” into deterministic science.

How To Host Your Own DNS-over-HTTPS And DNS-over-TLS Services

Your ISP spies on your Internet traffic out of your location.  They all do it.  It another way that they make money.  They sell the details of your internet traffic to advertisers on their network and other advertising networks in order to sell products back to you.  The personalized ads that you see on your browser pages are in part due to your ISP spying on you.

DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS is a means to shield your internet traffic from your ISP.  In previous days, it was possible to use the DNS of a company such as Google, 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4, as you DNS, however then Google can watch your traffic instead of your own ISP; Not much of an Improvement.

If you follow the guide below, you will be informed of the layout and configurations necessary to run your own, independent DNS server, from your hosted Web server, which can in turn power your DNS for internal local networks and your devices.  It provides a roll-your-own type of approach to Internet and network security.

How To Host Your Own DNS-over-HTTPS And DNS-over-TLS Services

With Technitium DNS Server, you can not just consume DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) or DNS-over-TLS (DoT) services using forwarders but you can also host these services yourself. There can be several reasons to host your own DoH or DoT service. You may wish to have better privacy by not sharing your data with public DNS providers. Or your network or ISP blocks popular DoT and DoH services and also interferes with unencrypted DNS traffic.

In this post, we will setup DoT and DoH services on a cloud server and configure a locally running Technitium DNS Server to use the DoH service as a forwarder bypassing any network restrictions that may be in place.

How to export 4k video with Premiere Pro CS 5.5

The bullet points for altering frame size need amending as the order in which you do them is wrong. You have to do it in this order or the dreaded “Invalid framesize/framerate for this Level. Please lower the Frame Dimensions, Frame Rate or increase the Profile and Level and try again.” keeps popping up.
• ignore the TV Standard (it’s a trick question), pick PAL or NTSC – it doesn’t matter
• set the Pixel Aspect Ratio to Square Pixels
• set the Profile to High
• set the Level to 5.1
• set the Frame Width to 3840
• set the Frame Height to 2160
• change the frame rate to match your footage (unless you’re doing some conversion magic)

If you’re editing 2.7k footage, the frame width and height are 2704 and 1520 respectively. The last two parameters (Profile and Level) are responsible for giving the initial error message by the way.

Building Your Color Palette – not 4, more like 16

Building Your Color Palette

"You can't build anything with five hex codes. To build something real, you need a much more comprehensive set of colors to choose from"

The website color pallet is more involved than a simple collection of 5 hex values.  In reality, each of those 5 values needs between 2-5 additional saturation values in order to serve as accent colors, highlights, warnings, promotions, and alerts.

The five base colors simply serve as the pallet, but in reality, approximately 16 colors are needed to comprise the full pallet.
